What Is a Business Tech Health Check (And Why Your Business Needs One)
What Is a Tech Health Check?
A business tech health check is exactly what it sounds like: I come to your office and look at every part of your technology setup. Computers, network, WiFi, security, backups, passwords — the whole picture.
Then I give you a plain-English report that says: here's what's fine, here's what needs attention, here's what to fix first, and here's what it'll cost. No scare tactics, no upsell — just an honest assessment.
Why Bother?
Most small business owners I meet in Port Townsend have a "it works until it doesn't" approach to technology. They don't think about backups until a hard drive dies. They don't think about security until they get a ransomware email. They don't think about network reliability until the internet goes down during a busy Friday.
A health check finds these problems before they find you. And it's a lot cheaper to fix something proactively than to recover from a failure.
What I Check
- Computers — Are they running current, supported operating systems? Are they slowing down? Do they have enough storage and memory?
- Backups — Do backups exist? Are they actually running? Can you restore from them? (You'd be surprised how often the answer to #3 is no.)
- Security — Antivirus status, firewall configuration, password practices, email filtering. Are you protected against common threats?
- Network — WiFi coverage, router age and security, internet speed. Is your network a bottleneck?
- Software — Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace health, critical software licenses, update status.
- Devices — Printers, phones, anything else connected to your network.
What You Get
After the check, you receive a written report with three sections:
- Critical issues — Things that need fixing now (e.g., no backup running, expired security certificates).
- Recommended improvements — Things that will save you time or reduce risk (e.g., upgrade an old router, switch to SSD).
- Future planning — Things to budget for in the next 6-12 months (e.g., Windows 11 upgrades, new hardware).
Everything is in plain English. No jargon. You'll know exactly what's going on with your technology and what to do about it.
How Much Does It Cost?
The tech health check is $100 flat — a single hour of my time at your office. If you're outside Port Townsend city limits in Jefferson County, the rate is the same but I may add travel time.
After the check, you decide what to fix and when. No pressure, no package deals, no monthly contracts. I'm here when you need me.
