Password Manager Setup Guide for Port Townsend Seniors

Do You Have Too Many Passwords to Remember?

If you're like most people I help in Port Townsend, you have passwords for email, online banking, social security, Netflix, Amazon, your phone bill, maybe a dozen other sites. And you're supposed to make each one different and complicated.

It's impossible to remember all of them. So most people do one of two things: use the same password everywhere (dangerous) or write them on sticky notes (also dangerous). There's a better way.

      What Is a Password Manager?

A password manager is a secure app that remembers all your passwords for you. You only need to remember ONE master password. The app does the rest. When you visit a website, it fills in your username and password automatically.

Think of it like a locked box. The box holds all your passwords. You only need the one key (your master password) to open it.

      Why You Should Use One

Here's what I see when I help Port Townsend seniors clean up after a scam:

    • Using the same password for email, banking, and everything else means if one site gets hacked, the scammer has access to ALL your accounts.
    • Writing passwords on paper beside your computer means anyone who visits can see them.
    • Using simple passwords you can remember means they're easy for hackers to guess.

A password manager fixes all of this. Each account gets its own strong, random password. You don't need to remember any of them. Only your master password matters.

    How to Get Started

I can set this up for you in about an hour. Here's what happens:

  1. I install a password manager on your computer and phone.
  2. We set up a strong master password that you can remember but others can't guess.
  3. I help you save your existing passwords into the app.
  4. I show you how it works — how to log into websites, how to find a password if you need it, what to do on your phone.

After that, whenever you create a new account, the app offers to make a strong password and save it automatically. You just click yes.

Is It Safe?

Yes. Your passwords are encrypted — scrambled into code that no one can read without your master password. Not even the company that makes the app can see them.

The one rule: don't share your master password with anyone. I won't ask for it. Scammers will. If someone calls and asks for it, hang up.

I use Bitwarden (which I self-host through Vaultwarden for myself) and recommend it to clients. It's free for basic use, works on computers and phones, and is trusted by security professionals worldwide.
