Tech Tips for Port Townsend — June 2026

Welcome to Summer — Watch Your Computer's Temperature

Port Townsend summers are mild compared to most places, but even a 75°F day can cause problems for a laptop with clogged vents. I've seen more than a few computers this time of year that are shutting down due to heat — especially from pet hair and dust inside the case.

Quick tip: If your laptop feels hot to the touch on the bottom, or the fans are running loudly all the time, it needs a clean. I can open it up and clear the dust in about 30 minutes during a tune-up.

Summer Travel Computer Security

If you're traveling this summer, here's what I tell my clients:

  • Don't use public WiFi (coffee shops, hotels, airports) without a VPN. If you don't have one, use your phone's hotspot instead — it's more secure.
  • Update everything before you go. Install those Windows updates, update your phone, and make sure your antivirus is current.
  • Back up before you leave. If your laptop is stolen or damaged on vacation, you'll be glad you have a backup at home.
  • Don't leave your laptop in a hot car. Even 15 minutes in a parked car on a sunny day can damage the battery and screen.

Scam Watch: What's Circulating Right Now

I've seen a rise in two types of scams hitting Port Townsend this month:

1. The "Subscription Renewal" Email Scam

You get an email saying your Netflix / Norton / Microsoft subscription is expiring and they're going to charge you $300+. It looks real, with logos and everything. But the link goes to a fake login page designed to steal your password and credit card.

Rule: Never click a link in an unexpected billing email. Go directly to the website yourself and check your account.

2. The "Your Relative Is In Trouble" Phone Scam

Someone calls pretending to be a family member in an emergency. They might even have their name and voice (spoofed). They need money urgently — gift cards, wire transfer, Bitcoin.

Rule: Hang up and call the family member on a number you already have. Don't call the number they gave you.

Coming Up in July

Next month I'll be writing about: WiFi dead zones in older Port Townsend homes, how to choose a good antivirus (and avoid the bad ones), and a guide to setting up a home office that actually works.
